An expansive project encompassing interior, exterior, architectural and spatial elements, with the task of turning a working stable into a unique place of refuge tailored to the needs of the client.

There was to be no involvement of an architect, we would work directly and organically with a trusted local builder. From the initial plans the design was intended to evolve as the project progressed, in reaction to discoveries made and through interaction with the space. No methods or materials would be employed that could not be proficiently carried out by myself or Billy with the aim of using simple and honest materials in an extra-ordinary way.

We decided that there were no real changes to be made to the original make up of the building – it would be repaired where needed, modernised only if necessary with no dramatic changes to layout or structure. Additions would stand alone almost as if they were furniture, harmonious with the surroundings but not matching, enhancing the space without disturbing it.

Windows would remain where they had been but perhaps tweaked slightly in size and use as the perspective of the building changed. The connection with garden and surroundings played an important role here with a large central pivot door where the main entrance had once been, next to this a long low window would allow you to sit at once inside and out whilst framing the garden beyond. Throughout the building each window’s use was considered with no two alike.

The floors and surfaces would be integral to feel of the building with textures and heights dividing the space by use. First the entrance/dining employed a plain hand finished mortar, the kitchen with the same base but slices of local yew were inlaid by hand, a step up to the living area with reclaimed pine boards within which was housed a sunken brick and tile hearth, finally a toilet of pine offcuts next the bathroom with mosaic tiles which I placed impromptu on site.

The main intervention within the space would be the addition of a freestanding sleeping module or “Pod” which would house a single occupant. Constructed entirely of timber the design utilising both solid and sheet material, the structure would be exposed and honest with intention. Nestled at the east end of the building amongst the rafters, the structure is elevated and without roof providing a vantage point over the entire space whilst also sheltering the kitchen below. This structure along with the windows proved a challenge to realise – it was overcome with the collaboration of Will, a skilled joiner who was both understanding and capable in translating the approach and feel of my furniture into something of a larger scale taking my design from theory to reality.

From kitchen to seating, door handles and hardware, lighting or drain covers… All items in the space were either designed or sourced by us.

Overall the project was a pretty honest reflection of my thoughts and approach, the client trusting and appreciating our decisions and ultimately providing us with a proving ground for ideas, an opportunity to create a space for living.

 solid textile board, designed specifically to work with Really utilising a folding V cut net (a unique feature of the material) that is secured with a friction fitting tie.

The two part net nests together neatly within the Really sheet to ensure an economical use of the material that also keeps waste to a minimum.

The stool was originally available in a limited quantity at DSMNY accompanied by a clothes rail and hanger designed using the same approach and material.

The kinked end and angled shape are intended to provide maximum space within a compact footprint while also making the desk easy to navigate around and also allow the users to easily interact. ‘s new space J.Bell. The space which is next door to the original Lanark will provide extra seating and a rotating display/retail wall. All furniture was designed to use ready made items and hardware where possible, re-purposing catering supplies and readily available materials. With the tables this idea of repurposing was not possible so we opted to go with a design with minimal waste and labour involved. The irregular tops are cut from a single sheet of ply that is divided into a grid of 10 and 5 degree angles this uses the board entirely producing no waste. The shapes are intended to be easy to slip past in the tight space while also allowing interesting configurations for large groups if needed. The legs are a repeat of the same design utilising a laser cut bracket and tubular upright, there is no need for further supporting structure which means the tables can also stack in to towers of three.

store on Calvert Avenue. The shelving uses the same width of pine plank throughout. The planks are held together with 3 way steel box clips reducing the amount of visible screws and providing a minimal yet strong structure that can be easily dismantled and re-configured for future installations.

Studio Nicholson

Design and manufacture of set elements for Kiko’s first womenswear collection. The steel stands that support the wood ring dismantle allowing the the stands to be used in conjunction with supplementary parts for future displays. Mesh tube protector sleeves were used to add texture and colour layering onto the steel following the aesthetic of the collection which used mixed fabrics, weaving and knitting.

One of the main decisions was to stay away from plywood, using a different material for each item and when not possible keeping the different materials of one item the same colour or tone. A series of tables and fixtures designed for the 

. The tables were designed at different heights doubling as both seating and surfaces to create a listening area for mixtapes produced by Brain Dead. Each table includes a routing for the power supply of the listening equipment through one leg. The tops are created by cutting full sheets of Valchromat using an random grid of 5 and 10 degree angles making each table unique in size and shape this approach uses the entire sheet producing no waste. The design of the fixtures is a continuation of earlier pieces produced for Brain Dead intended to work along side this pieces when needed.
